About the role
The Council is recruiting two independent members to join our Standards Committee for a 4 year period (maximum of 2 terms), to help promote and maintain high standards of conduct by elected and co-opted members. One of these 2 Independent Members positions will be as Chair of the Council’s Standards Committee.
If appointed, applicants will learn more about the Council’s ethical framework and how local government organisations operate, whilst working with the Monitoring Officer to provide objective and impartial views on issues relating to councillor behaviour. However, co-opted independent members have no voting rights on the standards committee.

About you
Applicants should have the ability to be objective and impartial with good analytical and communication skills. They should also be available to attend quarterly Committee meetings and ad hoc meetings to deal with case work.

To ensure independence, there are restrictions on independent members, so for example, they should not be active in local or national politics, have had significant previous dealings with the Council which compromise their impartiality nor be a serving councillor or officer (or the spouse or civil partner of a councillor or officer) of Salford City Council, any other County or County Borough Council, a Fire Authority, a National Park Authority, or a Community/ Town Council.

Independent committee members will be entitled to claim an allowance. The Independent Member who is appointed Chair of the Standards Committee is entitled to an annual allowance of £1,109. The second Independent Member will be paid an annual allowance of £408.84. Please specify on your application which role(s) you are applying for.
